The Importance of Good Oral Hygiene

“You need to brush your teeth, floss, and rinse twice a day!” You have probably heard these words—or admonishments—many, many times throughout your life. After a while, it may even sound like nagging. But did you know that oral hygiene is one of the most important aspects of your regular health routine? Whether you attend a Family Dentistry for your oral health or are looking into cosmetic dentistry to make your teeth straighter or brighter, you should know that oral hygiene is essential to a healthy, happy body.

Poor oral hygiene can cause tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth erosion! Tooth decay occurs when holes are formed in the enamel of the tooth, which is usually caused by plaque which has built up on your teeth. If you have tooth decay, you may require tooth fillings or crowns. Gum disease is an infection of your gum tissue, which is caused by plaque and tartar. Mild gum disease is called gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. But if left untreated, it can turn into periodontitis, which actually affects the gum tissue that joins your teeth to your gums! Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults and children. Tooth erosion is the result of acid on the teeth, which causes your tooth enamel to wear away–this makes your teeth much more sensitive to hot and cold foods.

What can you do to promote good oral hygiene? Once you have gotten into the habit of a regular routine, it is fairly simple to keep your teeth and gums in top shape. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste that contains fluoride. You should brush for at least two minutes and make sure to cover all the areas of the tooth, especially the location where the tooth meets the gum. If possible, use an electric spinning toothbrush in place of a manual one. You should also floss between your teeth at least once a day–but ideally, this should be done twice a day as well.
